Help students work toward
mastering specific concepts
Because there is always a lot of material to get through in a school year, students often feel that they haven’t had enough time or practice with one concept or another. A great way for these students to take charge of their learning is to work with a tutor like me to build a plan and strategies for nailing that needed practice.
Help students with weekly math homework and/or math worksheets
Plenty of students learn and work better when they have a knowledgeable work partner who can answer questions, be a sounding board for ideas, share efficient strategies and help maintain enthusiasm and motivation. That’s me!
Help students find more personal, enjoyable and rewarding meaning in math
Mathematical tools give us broadening and exciting ways to engage with the world around us, as well as with our own thinking. For example, I used a branch of math called “combinatorics” to make this cool art. With me, students can explore creative uses of math and learn how to engage their inherent creativity in the work of problem-solving.

Better understanding through a tangible approach, even virtually
Visual aids and manipulables (that’s fancy math teacher speak for tangible materials you can mold, count, take apart, put back together) are great learning tools, but you may not have a bunch of those in your home. That’s cool, neither do I. I’m a huge proponent of this idea: if you have to build the right tool for the task at hand, then you learn how that task works. Students gain crucial insight into how math works when we build the materials we need as we go, out of paper, pencils and other everyday items.
